Guide · Getting started

Your first deposit at a Canadian sportsbook, step by step.

The process is short, but the details matter. This is the walkthrough for someone who has never funded an online sportsbook before.

Before you start

Have your government ID ready. Have your bank account or debit card ready. Decide before you open any book what your monthly gambling budget is and be ready to enter it as a deposit limit. That single decision is the most impactful thing you can do.

Signup

Open the operator's site from your province (an IP address in Ontario is required for Ontario books). Enter your legal name, date of birth, and Canadian address. AGCO-licensed books verify identity at signup using government databases. If verification fails, you will be asked to upload a driver's licence or passport.

Set deposit limits before your first deposit

Every regulated Canadian book has deposit limits under Account Settings, Responsible Gambling, or a similar path. Set daily, weekly, and monthly limits before you enter payment details. Raising a deposit limit later requires a 24-hour cool-off; lowering one is instant. This asymmetry is deliberate. Use it.

Making the deposit

Interac e-Transfer is the standard Canadian deposit method. Minimums range from $5 to $20 depending on operator. Funds arrive in your betting balance within minutes. Card deposits work at most books but some Canadian banks decline gambling transactions by default; if that happens, use Interac. Crypto is offshore-only.

Your first bet

Start small. A first bet is not for chasing value; it is for getting familiar with how the interface works, how bet slips settle, and how quickly the operator updates. Only after you are comfortable with the mechanics should you scale up. Never chase a losing first deposit with a second one.

Withdrawal reality check

Read the withdrawal terms before you deposit, not after. Ontario books typically settle Interac withdrawals in under 24 hours after first-withdrawal verification. Offshore books can take 3 to 10 days. If a book requires 'wagering the deposit once' before withdrawal, know that up front.
