Shots on goal, saves, hits, blocks, and points props are the most-bet non-moneyline markets in Canadian hockey. This guide covers what each market means, how books price it, and where the edges live.
Shots on goal
A player's shots-on-goal prop is the count of shots that hit the net, whether they score, are saved, or hit the post. Missed shots do not count. Blocked shots do not count. Books price 2.5, 3.5, 4.5, and 5.5 for top-line forwards, and top-line defencemen who take shots (Cale Makar, Adam Fox) are priced at 2.5 or 3.5. Shots is the most-bet NHL prop and the market with the tightest pricing.
Saves and shots against for goalies
Goalie saves is the count of shots stopped. Books price 24.5, 27.5, 29.5, and 31.5 depending on opposition. The paired market is shots against, which is total shots faced regardless of outcome. If you have an opinion on a game's pace, saves is a better bet than moneyline because it lets you profit from a game going the way you expected even if the wrong side wins.
Hits, blocks, and time on ice
Hits and blocks are the traditional 'gritty' props. Hit and block counts are stat-tracker judgment calls, which creates variance a sharp bettor can exploit. Some rink stat-crews record hits generously; others do not. Books do not adjust for this. Time on ice is priced at 18:00 or 20:00 for top forwards, less common but a genuine edge for anyone who reads deployment patterns.
Points and multipoint markets
Points is the sum of goals and assists. Books price 0.5, 1.5, and 2.5. The 1.5+ line for a top scorer runs +200 to +350 typically. Multipoint markets like 'anytime goalscorer' or 'first goalscorer' are the biggest-priced hockey props but win at low rates. First goalscorer is a novelty bet, not a serious market.
