Alberta is opening its market, but for now the legal book is PlayAlberta.
The Alberta government has passed the iGaming Alberta Act and is rolling out a private-operator market in 2026. Until that market goes live, PlayAlberta is the only fully-regulated online option, with Kahnawake books widely used alongside it.

Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC), with iGaming Alberta launching in 2026.
The current situation
PlayAlberta.ca is the AGLC-operated online sportsbook and casino, and it has been the sole legal online product in Alberta since 2020. Interac supported, CAD wallets, and provincial support programmes funded by profits.
In 2024 the Alberta legislature passed Bill 16, the iGaming Alberta Act, which creates a competitive private-operator market modelled loosely on Ontario. Rollout is scheduled for 2026 and will bring bet365, FanDuel, DraftKings, and BetMGM into the province under a new regulator, iGaming Alberta. Until that opens, PlayAlberta is the only book with clear Alberta regulatory authority.
Alongside PlayAlberta, Kahnawake-licensed operators like Sports Interaction have taken Alberta bets legally under the same grey-area framework that applies across Canada outside Ontario. Offshore books also serve Alberta bettors but with no Canadian regulatory recourse.

What to watch for in Alberta
- The iGaming Alberta launch date. Once private operators go live, licensing tier and consumer protection change materially.
- Advertising rules. Alberta has not yet adopted the AGCO-style prohibition on referencing bonuses in public advertising.
- Bill 16 secondary regulations. Some operational details, including responsible-gambling requirements, are still being written.
